daddy. Ish da? +30 times in row

I think “love” is when you answer the same question your son ask +30 times in row with a smile on your face. Adnan my almost 3 years old son asked me “Ish da?” (what is this?) pointing toward a yellow flower we saw in a Japaneses garden in our trip to Malaysia this year March 2016, I answered him in Arabic 15 times (Warda) and in English (Flower) as i usually do to increase his chances in learning two languages faster when he grow up.

Every time he asks me I feel happy. I look him in the eyes and stop for a moment, answering his question with different tones. sometimes with an exciting tone and sometimes with a doll one. looking at him while he is processing my response, amused with the view. His curiosity spins between his eyes and lips.

I never thought I would be this patient, but apparently fatherhood grant you super powers which makes you a superhero in your kids eyes when they get in trouble. I still run to my dad when I get stuck and need guidance and even if I did not follow his advice, It feels safe to hear his thoughts and ideas regarding it

it makes me proud that my son ask questions and turn his head toward me waiting for an answer, knowing that he does not feel bad asking me makes me feel i’m doing the right thing, knowing that he is processing the response and he needs me to repeat it makes me sure he has a determined personality which will serve him when i’m not around.

The time I spent answering his questions pay back when he suddenly use “flowers” in the middle of an innocent sentence, he might not get it right the first time but there is a cell in his brain stored this piece of information and my next project is to connect the dots until he can express his thoughts.

Yes Fatherhood is a long trip with no return ticket, once you go this road  there is no coming back, you will always carry their happiness and sad moments with you for the rest of your life, it’s like you have another piece of yourself detached, running all over the place doing all sort of stuff that you have to embrace

if you haven’t experienced fatherhood yet on purpose (delaying marriage, or delaying having kids). you are missing on something special. This is a bond that you cannot replicate even with your soulmate.

If you have kids and busy with something else (making money, expanding your business, getting a better job) then you should always take a moment and step back, look around and evaluate what’s important. I took this step during this vacation where i spent quality time with family disconnecting myself from everything else kept me busy the whole year

Your dad and mom did answer your simple questions when you were young, I even believe they still do. Do not neglect the fact that they gone through the same experience, raising you to be the person you are today. if they are still alive then always say what you feel toward them, in your family what’s app group or in person, hug your mom when you go for a visit, she needs it. talk to your sister more often she needs someone to listen, advice your youngest brother and say Hi to your older brother.

Your family, parents and siblings are more important than everything else. they don’t want anything from you beside yourself. It sounds cliche but sometimes I forget and I need a reminder. and this is a letter for the future me to remind me if I forget again.

Thank god for the blessing of having kids and a family. If you are tying to have this gift then I truly hope that god grant your wish and once you receive it, be patient and grateful, it’s not a burden, it’s something you need to have to feel complete.

July 31, 2010 at 9:23am

Jeddah floods and the Sewage System

Jeddah is the second largest city after the capital Riyadh. The city located in the west coast of Saudi Arabia, it’s considered to be the commercial port and the entrance for Hojaj who performs pilgrims every year from all over the world. Jeddah is a modern city with open minded community. Most of those who live in Jeddah are from different countries that came to Saudi Arabia for business or Haj and then decided to settle down in Jeddah before it became part of the kingdom; once it became a part of Saudi Arabia the people who lived there gained the Saudi citizenship in the process.

In 2009 Jeddah experienced its first crisedownload s with floods, resulting into huge loses in buildings and cars and most importantly 123 deaths in only few hours of constant rain. Some parts of the city could not handle it because the sewage system was not built yet.

The picture above is taken after the disaster. The roads here are used to be a high way containing 10 lines, 5 for each direction. Most of the deaths and damages were in that area and the area beyond it where the poor people lived.

In this article (Sewage scandal story can ‘shake Saudi’)  the writer explain the reasons behind this crises. The problems of floods were facing Jeddah since 1980 but it was never as harsh as in

2009.

picture-8Originally the municipality of Jeddah city blamed the huge amount of rain! After the floods the government of Saudi Arabia built an agency called “Anti-corruption Agency” to fight corruption and build the ethical standers in the community. The agency issued a report about the ongoing efforts to develop the sewage system, it shows that the government has spent 1 Billion dollar to solve this issue but the agency judged that the contractor delayed the project which was supposed to end in 2008 and they are the one to be blamed.

There are two issues here which are: if the contractor delayed a project, there is a sum of fines should be applied, also the delay itself should come from governmental authorities which is the “municipality of Jeddah city” a governmental sector who is supposed to appl penalties and reject the delay request. But what happened is that the contractor gained a delay acceptance and the fines were waived as well.

The anti-corruption agency started an investigation against the officials who approved the request and waived the penalties. A total number of 99 people are still in the investigation process and court.

In order for something like this to happen, 99 people who were in charge of this project made an unethical decisions. Most likely because of “money temptation” since the investigations resulted in finding huge sum of money in some of the off-shore accounts of some of the officials. Others who were in the lower ladder hidden their money in their Saudi bank accounts, and others hidden their money in their own houses buried in their backyard after the floods accrued.

This example of unethical choices leaded to the death of 123 people, it also led to damages in houses and cars worth millions of dollars. Roads and bridges were vanished. I believe the engineers who were aware of these violations and accepted it are the most unethical people between all the others. Since they are aware of how dangerous such thing may lead. Yet they approved it for their personal gain.

Others might never imagine this day to come and result in that much of loses. Yet they did what they have done and most likely they well never live their life feeling normal about the event.

The same issue appeared on the surface again in Jeddah, and Riyadh, but luckily the damages in human lives were fewer than the crises in Jeddah 2009.

I believe this unethical scheme is built around an unethical environment which includes high rank officials, companies, government employees, and also citizens. unless the environment had more restricted law against everyone from top to bottom in an equal manner, we will continue to see this happening and more crises to be prepared for.

World War 2 For Dummies

nagasakibombnuclear.originalIt’s complicated to determine when the world war two started exactly depending on where you reading and from which perspective the historian is writing from. Some would argue that it started in September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Others would argue that it started in 1933 when Hitler took over the power in Germany. Another argument would be that it started in 1937 when the Japanese invaded China because the war between those two parties ended in 1945. The last argument which I personally lean more into is that the world war two actually started in 1931 when Japan Invaded Manchuria since from there everything evolved and leaded to the world war two.

bh5There was a global involvement in the world war two which is the reason why the war was granted the name “world war two” and those countries are divided into different categories, there was two categories that were pro-invading and starting the war, The First category is “The Axis Powers” which are the countries who signed the Tripartite Treaty, and they are: Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Second category is “The Co-signers of the Tripartite Treaty” and they are: Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia.

On the other side of the war, there were three different categories, the first category was “Countries that were annexed by, or at war with, Axis Powers before the World War II”, which are: China, Australia, Ethiopia. The second category was the “Allied Powers” which are the following countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand, South Africa, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, United States. The third category is “Supporters of the Allies” which include the following: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt(2), El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Uruguay, Venezuela.

The progress of the war was shifting between both sides, that progress was translated in occupying or attacking countries who are In most cases were the battle field of war world two. And that increased the number of countries which were involved in that massive war, First Germany attacked and occupied the following countries: Albania, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Lativa, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Yougoslavia. Secondly Italy occupied and attacked the following countries: Albania, Greece. And thirdly, the Soviet Union attacked: Estonia, Finland Lativa, Lithuania, Poland. Fourthly, the United State of America occupied Denmark, Tunisia and Iceland.

The fighting between Japan and China was brutal, brutal enough to actually effect the relationship between those two countries up until today, but the world war two that we are all know more about is the one in the European sector of the world, where Hitler took power and started giving the revolutionary promises to germens to return the homeland to its former glory, in the beginning it was introduced as a new style of combat using technology and air force to protect the troops on land, which was a very effective method back then and The Nazis were able to roll over Poland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and then all of France. Until they were in control of most of central Europe, where they began to set the great Britain as a goal. Meanwhile, Europeans were also fighting each other in North Africa. In 1941 the Nazis invaded Russia breaking a non-aggression pact that the two powers had signed in 1939, in the same year of 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor which helped in creating alliance between great powers and eventually leaded to the end of war world two with massive destruction and high rate of death between all sides involved.

A Picture worth a Thousand Words

My review about MAUS the Novel, for more information about the Novel click here

Graphics are considered to be a very effective way to communicate information to others, it adds a third dimension to the story and may cover a missing sense that the reader could understand differently. While it provide such positive outcome, one of its negative outcomes that it may limit the reader’s imaginations. Imagination is part of the experience and a very important factor in writing a story or a novel. Many readers consider their main source of enjoyment in reading is that it dependent entirely on the opportunity to exceed the written words with your imagination.

mausMAUS is a graphical novel written and published with huge dependent toward the graphic content of the story. The Author described the Holocaust from the victim point of view and used the graphics and symbols to represent the other involving sides along the way.  The Jews were represented as mice, the Germens as cats, and the Polish as pigs. Such representation has its own amplifications that the writer wish the reader to get, in fact he does not want to open up the door for reader to use their unlimited imagination while reading, what he wanted “in mu humble opinion” is that you become indirectly supportive to the cause he is writing about and grant the victims your absolute sympathy. A mouse is a friendly creature that look innocent and is not going to hurt anyone, while cats are in nature a creature that lives to hunt a mouse and consider Mice as a meal. While you go on reading the novel you will find those cats and pigs have this aggressive facial expressions like showing their teeth! another way to systematize those who love cats to view this particular kind of cats in the context of the story as evil.

imagesYou may also notice in those graphics that the mice is the only social group which you as a human being can relate to! you may consider yourself a mice while going through the novel since they appear like human in terms of clothing, and other daily habits such as driving cars, laughter and smile. So you end up putting yourself in their shoes systematically and consider whatever happens in the story as if it happened to you personally, which may lead you to feel angry against Polish and Germans in the story context and sympathize with Jews.

If we compare this to a written only novel, where the writer tries to tell the story and describe the situation, you may feel those painful moments as less painful than what Spiegelman wanted us to feel. We may also put ourselves in the shoes of a German or a Polish instead of a Jew, while Spiegelman does not wish the reader to use his/her imagination in that extent, he try to focus our attention to invest all the imagination we may need to feel the misery of what the Jews been through in the Holocaust and feel every detail of the experience in their point of view.

The writer is clearly aware of the fact that he risks the enjoyment of imagination by giving readers a smaller driven channels of imagination that servers the message he try to convey. He is willing to do so in order for him to control the reader emotions and direct it against Germans and Polish. It’s clear that the message he tried to convey using this method is: readers should end up loving the Jews who were victimized in the Holocaust. Such risk in my opinion is well calculated and in order for the writer to provide the reader with another source of enjoyment, he worked harder on providing another source of enjoyment which is graphics. Mixed with a suitable script that can be understood by different age groups. It can be considered as a classical novel for elders and a comic story for children.

In most causes a writer should be bias. While this novel is clearly not, in fact it is written with the set of mind of favoritism toward the Jewish people. Yet this is an exception of the rule since those who were victimized should be supported in different ways. This is one of doing so, It was a successful method to transform the pain that the Jewish were feeling in those events to the rest of the world, even those who were not involved in the cause would still give the Jewish people the  sympathy they deserve.

As a reader who is originally from the Middle East and have mixed feeling toward Israel and the everlasting conflict in the Middle East between the Muslim countries and Israel. I felt challenged with the story and I felt the indirect way the author was using to try to convince me with his message, in the beginning I did not like it and in the back of my mind all I remember is pictures of Palestinians who suffer the same thing currently from Israel. I felt that if this story is not bias then am not supposed to read it in a bias attitude, but for a second I voluntarily gave up and provided a chance to listen. I ended up distinguishing heavily between those who are Jewish and those who support a Jewish Government. As a Muslim that I belong to a Muslim country, there is a huge difference between Muslims and their governments, and the message that Spiegelman was trying to convey is noble, he is trying to show the world how people may suffer for no reason. He is not defending Israelis acts, in fact he is against all inhuman acts no matter what race or group of people are practicing it

In general, I can relate to this as an indirect marketing methodology in the business world, where you explain everything that is in favor to the product you wish to promote without saying it clearly. It leads you to one result which is a positive result toward one thing against another. This novel is an example of  the indirect type of marketing that is tough in Business majors. And I believe that this novel was written while the indirect marketing strategy was on mind and been put on practice to serve the author.

I end up with this video that I've made in 2009 about the similarities between the Holocaust, and today's Palestinians misery: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=383886862464&l=5736796046421693277
